Are tolls and tariffs on users the best way to pay for our national transportation infrastructure?
Yes, per-user fees force efficient use of limited resources.
No, the benefits of roads flow also to those who do not use them. We should all help pay through taxes.

Engineering News-Record (ENR) To Host 2001 Construction Summit November 5th and 6th in Washington, D.C.

'Design and Construction in the Aftermath of Disaster' Added to Program

WASHINGTON - (October 11, 2001) - Engineering News-Record magazine, part of The McGraw-Hill Companies' (NYSE: MHP) Construction Information Group (CIG), will host its 5th Annual Construction Summit in Washington, D.C. at the Capital Hilton on November 5th and 6th.

This highly interactive program will bring together private and public sector owners with top-level executives from a cross-section of the construction industry to brainstorm solutions to seven of its most critical issues. The recommendations generated in these discussions will be the basis for a special issue of ENR to be published December 31st.

In light of the September 11th tragedy, a special session has been added to address improvements in security, life safety and structures for buildings and infrastructure of the future.

Confirmed participants include: Leslie E. Robertson, structural consultant to the World Trade Center; Ron Klemencic, chairman of the Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat; George J. Tamaro, partner, Mueser Rutledge Consulting Engineers (and president of The Moles), who is leading New York City's foundation support activities at the World Trade Center site; and Tod Rittenhouse, a principal of Weidlinger Associates, a specialist in security and blast-resistant design.

Invitations have also been extended to Lee Evey, program manager for the Pentagon Renovation, Marilyn Jordan Taylor, managing partner of architect-engineer Skidmore, Owings & Merrill; Cesar Pelli, design architect for the world's tallest buildings, the Petronas Towers in Malaysia; and real estate developer Larry A. Silverstein, who acquired the 99-year lease on the World Trade Center last July.

The other 6 sessions are:
Industry Image: Cleaning Up Our Act
How can construction improve its tarnished image and help attract young people into careers in engineering, construction management, the trades and other industry segments?

International Project Delivery
This session will build on ENR's earlier international summits, exploring the challenges of using different methods of project delivery in the international arena, where knowledge of the market forces and government regulations is critical to success.

Safety: Of Life and Limb
Construction safety has never been more complex and in need of good management, especially the relationship with regulatory authorities and compliance with safety rules. Industry safety experts will discuss, among other topics, differences between rulebook compliance with safety standards and commitment to safe practices and risk management.

Rx for Our Ailing Infrastructure
This roundtable will explore how the industry can build public support for expediting sorely needed power, transportation and environmental construction. How can funds be disbursed efficiently to projects with the highest priority? How can environmental issues be addressed? How can efforts in one sector help move work ahead in others?

Where Are We In The IT Revolution?
Roundtable participants will discuss how they are working through information technology issues that will shape the construction industry. How are companies using improved tools for collaboration and commerce?

Limited space is still available for the 2001 Construction Summit. Executives interested in registering can call Chuck Pinyan at 212.904.4634 or e-mail him at cpinyan@mcgraw-hill.com.
