Are tolls and tariffs on users the best way to pay for our national transportation infrastructure?
Yes, per-user fees force efficient use of limited resources.
No, the benefits of roads flow also to those who do not use them. We should all help pay through taxes.

Engineering News-Record and Architectural Record Each Win 2002 Jesse H. Neal Awards

McGraw-Hill Construction Information Group Publications Recognized for Editorial Excellence in Business Journalism

NEW YORK, N.Y., March 18, 2002 - Architectural Record and Engineering News Record, magazines published by The McGraw-Hill Companies' (NYSE: MHP) Construction Information Group (CIG), have won 2002 Jesse H. Neal Awards. Created by American Business Media, the 48-year old Neal Awards recognize editorial excellence in business journalism.

Engineering News Record, the leading construction industry business weekly, won the award for Best News Coverage (for a magazine with over $7 million in revenue) for its extensive reporting on the September 11th attacks. This included exposure of structural issues of other important U.S. buildings as well as eyewitness accounts from World Trade Center construction forces involved in site rescue, recovery and stabilization. In addition, ENR finished as the runner-up for the Grand Neal Award, given to the most outstanding example of excellence in business journalism.

"Post-September 11th, our coverage has not only been essential to our readership base, it has proven critical to an audience outside construction. Those interested in truly understanding the construction and architectural issues in the aftermath of the attacks are turning to CIG publications for insight they cannot find anywhere else. We are very proud of that fact," said Norbert Young, president of McGraw-Hill's Construction Information Group.

"News of architecture and the construction industry have never been as relevant to the mainstream as today. We applaud the efforts of Robert Ivy, editor-in-chief, Architectural Record, Jan Tuchman, editor-in-chief of ENR and their respective teams," said Jay McGraw, publisher, McGraw-Hill's Construction Information Group publications.

Architectural Record, the leading architecture monthly magazine took home the honor for Best Single Issue for a magazine with over $7 million in advertising and circulation revenue. The February 2001 issue of the magazine was titled 'Out There: Outside the Centers of Fashion'. It highlighted the authentic, creative work of architects across North America outside the fashion capitals of New York and Los Angeles.

"The jurors in the past have cited the comprehensive, rich mixture of Architectural Record stories that help and inspire our audience. This year we were honored for an issue that was especially close to the heart of the American architect," said Robert Ivy, editor-in-chief, Architectural Record.

Specially featured in the issue was an interview with the late Sam Mockbee, founder of Auburn University's rural studio, where students live and build innovative structures - sometimes out of the most unexpected materials such as hay bales and used tires - for residents of Hale County, Alabama.

Also featured were stories on K-12 school construction, an active market and opportunity for architects, as well as the first installment of a groundbreaking of a three-part firm marketing series.

Selecting this year's honorees was the distinguished Neal Board of Judges led by Marshall Loeb (Neal Judging Chair), Columnist, CBS MarketWatch; Don
Christiansen, President, Informatica; Jill Dutt, Assistant Managing Editor for
business news, The Washington Post; Diana Henriques, Financial Investigative
Reporter, The New York Times; Frank Lalli, Publishing Consultant; Professor Abe Peck, Medill School of Journalism; and Professor Don Ranly, University of
Missouri-Columbia.
