McGraw-Hill Construction’s Engineering News-Record Editors Honored by Construction Writers Association

Hall of Fame Induction for EiC Tuchman, Three Awards for Editorial Team

New York, NY – May 28, 2009 – Editors at McGraw-Hill Construction’s Engineering News-Record (ENR) received four prestigious awards at the recent Journalism and Photography Awards presented by the Construction Writers Association (CWA), a non-profit, non-partisan, international organization for journalism, photography, and communications professionals in the construction industry. The annual CWA Journalism and Photography Awards honor excellence in construction-related media.

ENR’s awards are as follows:

  • Janice L. Tuchman, ENR editor-in-chief, was inducted into the CWA’s Hall of Fame, which recognizes journalists for their lifetime achievement in the construction industry. The Hall of Fame was launched in 2008 in honor of the CWA’s 50th anniversary. Tuchman, an award-winning construction journalist with three decades of experience, pioneered the magazine's entry into the digital world, including the launch of ENR.com.
  • Tom Sawyer, senior editor, received the Godfrey Body of Work Award, recognizing a writer’s versatility, intelligence and superior writing. One of Sawyer’s award-winning pieces, “Land Route to South Pole” (ENR 2/23-3/3/08, p. 32), recounts a dangerous journey and terrifying accident in Antarctica. The judges found that “Tom’s outstanding research is matched by his gift for drama.”
  • Tudor Van Hampton, Midwest bureau chief, received the Boger Feature Writing Award for “Higher Learning” (ENR 11/3-11/10/08, p. 28), an investigation on the state of crane safety. Judges praised the article for its “significant premise, unique point of view, excellent story development, and engaging style.”
  • Tony Illia, special correspondent, received an Honorable Mention for “Gambling With Lives” (ENR 7/28-8/4/08, p. 28). The judges said, “His vivid writing style captures the shocking failure of the safety culture [in Las Vegas].”

“I am very proud of the ENR team’s dedication to excellence in our editorial product,” said Janice L. Tuchman, editor-in-chief, ENR. “We are honored to be recognized by our peers, and we are truly delighted to win several awards from the Construction Writers Association.”

As the primary trusted source for the building, design and construction industry, ENR and ENR.com provide the news, analysis, commentary and data that professionals need to do their jobs more effectively. Earlier this year, ENR was also honored by American Business Media (ABM) with four 2009 Neal Awards for “Best Single Article,” “Best Subject-related Series of Articles,” “Best News Coverage,” and “Best Use of Video;” and Tudor Van Hampton was named ABM’s 2009 McAllister Editorial Fellow.
