In late April, Global Green USA, a non-profit
environmental organization, along with actor Brad Pitt, announced
a design competition called, Advancing the Sustainable
Rebuilding of New Orleans and the Gulf Coast.
The competitions goal is to produce
sustainable and affordable design proposals for six neighborhoods
in the Gulf region. It isnt definite that the proposals
will be built, although that is a goal of the competition.
But they should act as a catalyst to encourage
local residents and officials to think about green strategies
for rebuilding.
According to Global Green, design submittals
must employ culturally, environmentally, and climactically
appropriate designs, materials, and strategies. Proposals
must include models for a multiuse community center, a single-family
home, and multifamily housing. The final designs will, say
the competitions creators, must the meet community needs,
utilize natural systems both on site and in surrounding blocks,
reduce financial and health burdens for residents, and make
maximum use of energy.
By May 2, more than 2,400 teams had
pre-registered for the competition. Others can still register
at www.globalgreen.org.
Final details on the competition, including the list of jurors,
the entry deadline, and details on fundraising, will be posted
online in the middle of this month. Finalist presentations
and jury review will occur before August 29, the one-year
anniversary of Katrinas landfall. Finalist designs will
be exhibited in New Orleans, in partnership with the Tulane
City Center.
