MGM Mirage recently announced that Studio
Daniel Libeskind, Murphy/Jahn Architects, and Rockwell Group
are designing components of its 76-acre development along
the Las Vegas Strip. "Project CityCenter" is an
18 million-square-foot complex of hotels, casinos, and retail
and residential space situated between the Monte Carlo and
Bellagio resorts. Libeskind and Rockwell are working on retail,
dining, and entertainment spaces that total 500,000 square
feet; Murphy/Jahn is responsible for two glass residential
towers comprising 810 units. They join architects Rafael Viñoly,
Norman Foster, James K M Cheng, Cesar Pelli, Gensler, and
Kohn Pedersen Fox Associates, whose participation was revealed
in September 2005. The development officially broke ground
on July 26, with anticipated completion by November 2009.
At $7 billion, it is the largest privately financed development
in the country, according to company officials. Costs have
increased $2 billion since the September unveiling due to
owner design changes and added residential units.
