Studio Daniel Libeskind has released designs for a new community center in Gulfport, Mississippi. The HOPE Center—whose initials stand for Home to Opportunity, Possibility and Empowerment—replaces a 4,000-square-foot facility that was badly damaged by Hurricane Katrina. It is being developed on a pro bono basis for the Boys and Girls Club of the Gulf Coast, which is now using nearby school space for its programs.

The 27,000-square-foot center will be located in the Forest Heights section of Gulfport. It will likely be made of precast concrete to better withstand future storms and topped with a distinctive curved metal roof. In addition to connected areas for education and recreation, it will include a clerestoried, double-height central spine that will act as a lobby, a game room, and a space for community events.

The firm is working with Gulfport-based Guild Hardy Architects, and targeting completion for fall 2007. And while the project budget is not set, project manager Kevin Teague says it will be less than $5 million. RockWorks, a charity funded largely by recording artists and technicians, is coordinating the funding.
