Subway Tunnel Collapses in Shanghai

(enr.construction.com - 7/14/03 issue)

The collapse of a subway station's pedestrian tunnel being built near the Huangpu River caused the July 1 collapse of a floodwall at the project site, leading to a massive influx of water in the tunnel and surrounding soil.

The breach caused a six-story audio-video wholesale market to settle unevenly, separate and eventually collapse. Five other buildings tilted and now are being demolished, according to local press reports. The 25-story Linjiang Huayuan building, housing the Shanghai Labor and Social Security Buearu, was threatened but declared safe on July 7.
