12:50 - 1:20 Lunch Keynote: 2008 U.S. Construction Outlook -- Midyear Update
The construction industry over the past two years has been largely defined by the steep downturn for homebuilding, but at the same time nonresidential building and public works have held up quite well. In 2008, the economy has moved closer to recession, and financing has tightened for both private and public projects. This keynote will update the 2008 projections for U.S. construction start activity, with the focus on the changing prospects for nonresidential building and public works.

Speaker:

Robert Murray, vice president, McGraw-Hill Construction Research and Analytics
1:20 - 1:30 Break
1:30 - 2:40 Challenge: Adapting to Changing Site Dynamics: Can we Build More with Less?
The global push to expand—particularly in the power and petrochemical sectors— comes as both owners and contractors both face competition for the shrinking supply of craft labor, experienced managers, critical materials and other project resources. At the same time, owners face rising construction costs and a shrinking contractor pool for more types of projects in more locations. What is the nature of this fast-changing site dynamic? How is it affecting owners and contractors in setting priorities and in realistic expectations? And how are both groups working to beat the odds and get the job done?
