Keynote

For centuries the tools and methods that were used to design and build the world’s great structures remained largely unchanged.  In the 20th century, the industry saw rapid changes as technology and innovation positively impacted nearly every aspect of engineering, project management and on-site construction.  The pace of this change has significantly accelerated in the last decade and is ever increasing today.  Fluor’s Chairman and CEO will address how the industry now needs to rethink the way it does business and use innovative new methods to work together to tackle the major policy issues facing the industry today.

Keynote: 2012 Global Economic Outlook

The outlook for the global economy is fraught with peril in what I call the "Year of Refunding Dangerously." There is over $7 trillion in global government debt that needs to be rolled over and $1 trillion from Europe. A messy default by one of the Euro zone members will have the potential to disrupt global financial markets and shut down lending to the global economy. Also, China has not truly experienced a significant recession nor do they have extensive experience dealing with a housing bubble. Finally, the United States has yet to forcefully act on its debt and deficits. All three of these areas pose serious risks for the global economy. Yet, policy makers from both the central banks and the political world will be active to reduce liquidity issues and act as stabilizers when things look bleak. This is why 2012 will be a volatile, challenging year for growth, but ultimately better than what the Mayans have predicted.

Panel: Mergers & Acquisitions vs. Organic Growth

Growth is a priority for engineering and construction businesses. Some are leveraging their acquisitions to position themselves for global expansion. Others are focusing on growing organically. Beyond the traditional high-growth markets on everyone’s radar screen, firms are tapping emerging markets that have potential. This panel will feature leaders from firms that are stepping outside their comfort zone and increasing their footprint in the international construction marketplace.

Regional Breakouts: Strategies for Growth in...

Breakout 1: Middle East & North Africa
Despite current global economical difficulties, the MENA region emerges as an important market for infrastructure and construction work. The region suffers from a huge shortage in housing and authorities are offering financial and legislative incentives to facilitate construction. There is demand for major infrastructure projects for power generation, sewage, public transport, railways, new airports and additional terminals. A growing requirement for sports facilities, with Qatar hosting the 2022 World Cup, presents an opportunity for constructing sophisticated sport facilities. This panel will include leaders from the region discussing opportunities and identifying the potential for global participation in major infrastructure projects.

Breakout 3: South American
Once known for beaches, samba and soccer, Brazil has more recently become a booming construction market with the world's eyes on development for the 2014 FIFA World Cup and the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro.  Brazil's growth stems from its exports of mineral and agricultural commodities.  A major obstacle to development has been the country's obsolete infrastructure, and it clearly needs to attract global investors for P3 projects and direct investment.  Major projects include new hydropower work at the River Xingu, tenders for roads, expansion of major airports, and oil exploration along the coast.

Breakouts by Sector

Breakout 1: Tapping the Global Transportation Market
Transportation infrastructure is critical for economic growth in every country. Infrastructure growth overall is forecasted to have 3.5% growth, the highest growth of any sector, according to IHS Inc. This session will explore the most active markets around the world for highways, rail and air transport construction. Examples of megaprojects under way include the 19-kilometer Great Belt Link spanning the Baltic Sea between Denmark and Germany, an $8.6-billion express rail link in China, and the modernization of New Delhi's Indira Gandhi International Airport. Leading engineers, contractors and owners will share their strategies for tapping this market.

Breakout 2:
The New Energy-Environmental Nexus: Meeting Global Demands Responsibly

With growth of developing world economies, opportunities are opening up for international engineers and construction firms in new global locations, particularly countries with rich resources. Utilities and independent power companies abroad are planning and building traditional power facilities, ranging from coal-fired plants to hydroelectric facilities, but are also rethinking their energy supply strategies in the wake of global events and changing economics. How will new environmental paradigms and a push for sustainability play roles in how facilities and infrastructure projects are designed, built and operated? Find out how industry firms are finding ways to provide their expertise at virtually every point in the supply chain. This panel will explore firms’ strategies to keep pace with the world’s energy needs and expand their global reach.

Breakout 3: Commercial Buildings & Manufacturing on the Rise in Active Markets
The buildings sector shows strong growth in specific active markets. For example, offices, commercial and institutional building construction is forecast to grow at almost 8% this year in the Asia Pacific region, according to IHS Inc. And there are pockets of opportunity in manufacturing as well for firms that are able to straddle international and domestic markets to support their global clients. This session will offer attendees insights from engineers, contractors and owners who worked successfully in this area.

Global Skyscrapers

America invented the skyscraper, and the building type is still one of our most highly visible exports. From China and Korea to Europe and the Middle East, tall buildings continue to be constructed at a rapid rate, with nearly 50 supertalls—more than 100 stories—expected to be completed or topped out in the next five years.
