Mani Golparvar-Fard, Ph.D.

Dr. Mani Golparvar-Fard is Assistant Professor of Civil Engineering at University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He is also director of the Real-time and Automated Monitoring and Control lab where research focuses on sensing and augmented reality visualization of construction performance metrics using digital images, site video streams, and building information models. He is also the co-founder and CTO of PARWorks, an award-winning startup company that focuses on producing the next generation of marker-less mobile augmented reality mobile apps. Mani has received his PhD in Civil Engineering and Master of Computer Science in 2010 from the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, and earned his Master’s in Civil Engineering in 2006 from the University of British Columbia. He also has received Master’s and Bachelor’s in Civil Engineering from Iran University of Science and Technology.
Dr. Golparvar-Fard’s research in the past two years have focused on 1) construction activity analysis using site video streams, 2) progress and quality monitoring using images and building information models, 3) automated generation of semantically-rich 3D CAD models from images, 4) energy performance monitoring of existing buildings using thermal images, and 5) context-aware AEC applications using mobile augmented reality systems. His work has been recipient of the 2012 best journal paper award from the ASCE Journal of Construction Engineering and Management, best conference paper awards from 2012 International Conference on Construction Application of Virtual Reality, and 2010 International Conference on Innovation in AEC; and best poster awards from ASCE Construction Research Congress in 2012 and 2009 and CII Annual Conference in 2010. His work has also been recognized by FIATECH CETI award in 2010. He is currently the vice-chair of the ASCE’s data sensing and analysis committee.

As managing editor of Engineering News-Record, Erin Joyce helps manage and integrate editorial content for the print and digital operations of ENR, including the launch of new digital editorial offerings such as mobile apps. She is also part of ENR's expansion of technology coverage and comes to ENR with 15 years of technology writing and digital media experience with B2B pubs, covering software development, operating systems, Web services and enterprise technologies.
Prior to joining ENR, Erin worked as executive editor of InternetNews for Jupitermedia Corp., where she also covered technology startups and venture financing, and oversaw the launch of new content management systems. She has also covered tech for BusinessWeek and American Banker magazine. A career detour at consulting engineering firm Flack + Kurtz in the early 1990s inspired a deep interest in building design and construction techniques that continues today. She is a graduate of Columbia University's Graduate School of Journalism and the University of Maine.

Jonatan Schumacher

As director of the firm’s Advanced Computational Modeling team, Jonatan Schumacher oversees and implements strategic development related to integrated structural design, façade design and building information modeling. He works closely with the building structure, building skin and building performance practices, assisting project teams firm wide. His experience encompasses architecture, engineering, product design, robotics and computer science. His areas of expertise include digital fabrication, automatic and generative geometry, computational analysis and building information modeling. He is fluent in more than five scripting languages and has expertise in various parametric modeling platforms, as well as data mining, problem modeling and knowledge exchange through APIs of Revit, Tekla, CATIA/Digital Project, Rhino and Grasshopper. Jonatan lectures at Stevens Institute of Technology, Hoboken, N.J. and at the Pratt Institute, Brooklyn, N.Y. He holds a masters degree in architectural engineering from Stevens Institute of Technology and a bachelor’s degree in Product Design and Engineering from Middlesex University, London.
