ENR Top 500 Design Firms


The Top 500 Design Firms list, published annually in April, ranks the 500 largest U.S.-based design firms, both publicly and privately held, based on design-specific revenue.  Gary Tulacz, Engineering News-Record’s Senior Editor and manager of ENR’s Top Lists for the past 20 years, and a panel of executives from the largest U.S. engineers and consultants, will discuss the results of the 2013 Top 500 survey and where they see opportunities for future business.

Paul Bonington is vice president of sales for McGraw-Hill Construction's media, a portfolio that includes Architectural Record, Engineering News-Record, GreenSource, Constructor, and the Regional Construction Publication brands. In this role he develops and manages the MHC media sales organization; and he drives transformation of the media business to an integrated service model which leverages MHC's research and information services, and optimizes digital, print and events delivery platforms for customers.
Prior to joining McGraw-Hill, Paul was vice president, worldwide marketing & product management for Globix Corporation, a data center and Internet service provider specializing in Web hosting, streaming media, and high-speed Internet access for enterprise customers in the U.S. and Europe.
From 1994 to 1998, Paul was senior vice president, group publisher for Mecklermedia, publisher of Internet World, Web Week, and Internet.com, and producer of the Internet World and ISPCon trade shows. At Mecklermedia Paul launched five media brands online and in print and championed the emerging need for media companies to adopt an integrated approach to the delivery of content and marketing services.
Prior to Mecklermedia Paul was director of national accounts for the International Data Group, publishers of Computerworld, CIO, PC World, MacWorld, and Network World, where he managed corporate accounts for IDG's media network. Paul has also held media sales and sales management positions with Fairchild, Penton, and Ziff-Davis publishing companies.
Throughout his career, Paul has been a leader, spokesperson, and advocate for driving Internet and digital transformation in the media and information markets. Paul earned a New York State Regents Scholarship and attended SUNY College at Oneonta, where he earned a B.S. degree in Business Economics and European History.

Santanu Das
Senior Vice President of Design & Simulation
Bentley Systems, Inc.

Santanu Das received his Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering from the University of Southern California in 1995 and was awarded a full graduate scholarship to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology where he taught numerical methods and object-oriented programming to engineers. In 1997, Santanu joined Research Engineers International as a senior programmer and helped transform the world-renowned STAAD structural line of products into an open architecture platform where other applications could seamlessly integrate. He helped start a new document collaboration and ASP company for engineers called Web4 in 2000 and became Chief Operating Officer of netGuru, a publically listed company, in 2003. After selling Research Engineers to Bentley Systems in 2005 and Web4 to another public company in 2006, Santanu currently serves as Senior Vice President of the Design and Simulation group where he manages over $300MM in revenues. In his spare time, Santanu loves to play competitive tennis, snowboard and spend time fishing with his two boys.

Alan Krause

Alan Krause is chairman and chief executive officer of MWH Global, headquartered in Broomfield, Colorado.  With more than 30 years of industry experience, Krause provides leadership to the worldwide operating companies of MWH while maintaining the organization’s position as the global leader of the wet infrastructure sector.

With professional expertise and personal passion focused on natural resources, Krause exemplifies the MWH purpose of Building a Better World with a commitment to protect and develop the world’s natural resources in a responsible and appropriate way. He has travelled the world engaging in dialogue to address the unique challenges facing MWH clients, advancing the organization’s commitment to providing customized engineering, management and construction services to meet client needs. This focus brings together integrated global teams providing sustainable solutions to world-class projects like the Tekeze Hydropower Project in Ethiopia and the Third Set of Locks project of the Panama Canal Expansion.

Krause joined MWH in 1997 when he merged his natural resources business TerraMatrix with Montgomery Watson.  He played a significant role in the integration of Harza and Montgomery Watson in 2001 to form MWH and has held numerous executive positions within the organization including president of the natural resources, industry and infrastructure sector of the business. He became president and chief operating officer in 2008 and was named president and CEO in November 2011.

Krause is a geotechnical engineer with a master’s degree in geological engineering from the University of Nevada Mackay School of Mines, has completed the Owner/President Management Program at Harvard Business School and is a member and distinguished engineer for the Pan American Academy of Engineering.

Carl Roehling

SmithGroupJJR, Inc.

Carl Roehling, FAIA, is president and chief executive officer of SmithGroupJJR, an international, architecture, engineering and planning firm.  SmithGroupJJR is presently ranked as the 26th largest architecture practice in the world by Building Design magazine’s annual World Architecture 100. In his role, Roehling is responsible for the strategic direction and marketing of SmithGroupJJR’s 10 U.S. offices.

During his 26 years with SmithGroupJJR, Roehling has served as principal-in-charge for many of the firm’s most notable projects.  Among them are Visteon Corporation’s 800,000-square-foot world headquarters in suburban Detroit, uniquely designed as a “village.”  Other key SmithGroupJJR projects under his direction include the new Detroit branch of the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago and the renovation and expansion of the Detroit Institute of Arts.  Currently, he is leading the master planning for an expansive, mixed-used development in Cyprus, the Makronisos Resort. Closer to home, Roehling is heading the development of a new master plan for the historic Detroit Athletic Club, Detroit, Mich.

Roehling joined SmithGroupJJR (then Smith, Hinchman & Grylls) in 1987. He was immediately assigned to the task of heading the firm’s activity for the corporate and university sectors, and managed significant projects such as the Chrysler World Headquarters, Auburn Hills, Mich.  Prior to his promotion to SmithGroupJJR president & CEO in 2001, Roehling was president of the firm’s Midwest U.S. operations with service on the firm’s Board of Directors since 1993.

A graduate of the University of Michigan College of Architecture and Urban Planning, Roehling received a Bachelor’s of Science in Architecture in 1973 and a Master’s of Science in Architecture in 1975. 

Roehling’s career features numerous leadership positions within the 72,000-member American Institute of Architects (AIA) on both the chapter and national levels.  He is the recipient of the prestigious Gold Medal Award -- the highest honor the organization can bestow on a member – by two AIA chapters: AIA-Detroit in 1999 and AIA-Michigan in 2006.  Roehling’s long relationship with the AIA includes his serving as president of the Michigan chapter in 1992 and the Detroit Chapter in 1986.  He also served on the Board of Directors for National AIA, as well as the American Architectural Foundation.

Active in the profession and his community, Roehling is the currently on the Board of Directors of the Michigan Architectural Foundation and the Southeast Michigan YMCA.  He is frequently called upon by the national and international media for his expertise, and has been quoted in Engineering News-Record, Architectural Record, The Wall Street Journal and Building Design (UK).

William Siegel

Mr. Siegel is Chairman, President, and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of The Kleinfelder Group, Inc. (Kleinfelder), an employee-owned science and engineering consulting firm providing solutions to meet our world’s complex infrastructure and natural resource challenges.

Headquartered in San Diego, California, Kleinfelder is one of the country’s top 50 architecture and design firms, and ranks in the top 100 of all global design firms. 

In his role as CEO, Mr. Siegel is responsible for the overall performance, strategy development and execution, and positioning of the firm.  He has provided technical and managerial services for Kleinfelder for over 25 years, with varying past assignments in line management and program- based assignments including supervision of company-wide marketing, communications, and program management groups. 

Mr. Siegel was raised in Northern Nevada and graduated with Bachelor’s (1984) and Master’s (1986) degrees in Civil Engineering from the University of Nevada at Reno.  He has served on various boards and committees and is currently serving as treasurer on the executive committee for the Design Professionals Coalition, and he is on the board of directors of the Construction Industry Round Table.  His past service includes roles with the California Geotechnical Engineers Association and the American Council of Engineering Companies.  He is a sought after speaker on business issues, particularly with regard to merger and acquisitions strategies and execution.

Gary Tulacz has been the senior editor in charge of the ENR Top List surveys for 20 years. In addition to producing and writing about the various top lists published throughout the year, he frequently reports on business, management and legal issues for ENR.  He also created and runs the ENR Construction Industry Confidence Index.  Before coming to ENR, he reported on employee and labor relations issues and workplace safety and has written books on employee drug testing, sexual harassment and immigration issues. He is a graduate of Fordham College and Fordham University School of Law.
