Howard W. Ashcraft, Jr.

Howard W. Ashcraft, Jr.Howard W. Ashcraft, Jr. is a Fellow of the American College of Construction Lawyers; an honorary member of the American Institute of Architects California Council and Steering Committee member on its task force for Integrated Project Delivery, a member of the American Arbitration Association panel for Large and Complex Construction Cases for California and Nevada; a former Governing Committee Member of the American Bar Association Forum on the Construction Industry; a participant in Legal Counsel Forum of the American Council of Engineering Companies; and other professional organizations in the construction industry. He has specialized in construction law since 1979, representing designers, owner and contractors in project formation, professional practice matters and construction disputes.

Howard has been lead counsel in numerous delay and impact cases and has tried construction jury and court trials as well as many construction arbitrations. Recent significant
matters include representing the State of California in a delay and impact case involving a critical transportation management facility, the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation in two prison construction delay claims, a structural steel design builder in a nine figure casino delay claim; an international consortium concerning defects in a major industrial facility in Mexico, a major public university in a delay and impact case arising from design and construction of a multi-disciplinary laboratory, and a national engineering firm in an eight figure delay claim. He also serves as general counsel to a risk retention group of 85 environmental and geotechnical engineering firms and consults regarding the use of electronic evidence in construction and other complex litigation.

James Bedrick

Jim Bedrick, AIA, is Vice President for Virtual Building and Design for Webcor Builders.  A registered architect, Mr. Bedrick holds degrees in Architecture and Electrical Engineering, and has over 25 years’ experience in the AEC industry.  After practicing architecture for ten years, he moved into the design and management of information systems for architecture firms.  In 1998 he joined 3Com Corporation, directing information technology for their worldwide construction and facilities management division.  In 2001 he joined Webcor, where his focus has been the use of information technology for simulation, coordination, communication, and knowledge sharing in design and construction teams.  Mr. Bedrick is active in many organizations working to advance information technology in service to the AEC industry, including Stanford University’s Center for Integrated Facilities Engineering, the International Alliance for Interoperability and the American Institute of Architects, where he serves on the Board Knowledge Committee and the Contract Documents Committee, and is a major contributor to the Integrated Project Delivery effort.

Lisa Dal Gallo

Lisa Dal GalloLisa Dal Gallo is an attorney with Hanson Bridgett LLP who has over 20 years of experience in the construction industry. Before becoming a lawyer, she worked professionally for one of the largest general contractors in the world.  During that eight year period, Lisa held several different field and office positions completing millions of dollars worth of work-in-place for both the interior, and core-and-shell divisions in the following sectors: medical / healthcare facilities, laboratories, retail space, office towers and light industrial.  Lisa's  field experience provides her with insight and understanding of the development process from design inception through completion of construction. Her transactional practice focuses on risk management and contract drafting, review and negotiation for owners, architects, construction managers, contractors and subcontractors utilizing various project delivery methods, including integrated project delivery, for both public and private works. Lisa is also familiar with the various contractual arrangements and business structures for public private partnerships.  On the claims side, she advises clients regarding a variety of legal issues including contractual disputes, claims analysis, negligence, termination, default, acceleration and delay, mechanic liens and stop notices, surety, and alternative dispute resolution.  Lisa has a Bachelor of Science in  Construction  Management from California State University Chico, and a Juris Doctors from Syracuse University.

J. Stuart Eckblad
AIA, Director, Design and Construction, UCSF

J. Stuart EckbladStuart is the Director of Design and Construction for the University of California, San Francisco Medical Center, and a Licensed Architect in California. He is a recognized expert in the area of Integrated Project Delivery and an industry leader in the philosophy of collaboration.

With more than 30 years of experience in the field, Stuart has held numerous executive positions responsible for the planning, design and construction of major hospitals and outpatient facilities, which allowed him ample opportunities to demonstrate the effectiveness of a collaborative process. He has a history of developing and implementing innovative project delivery models, for major capital programs, which promote the integration of project teams, processes and systems that reduce costs, improve efficiency and optimize project results for private and public entities.

Stuart is a founding member and past President of the Collaborative Process Institute, an organization created by owners, designers and builders to establish collaborative teams, processes and systems as the basis for the design and construction industry.

Stuart continues to pioneer the collaborative philosophy as both the Chair of the IPD Definitions Committee and as the Chair of the IPD Steering Committee for the AIACC.

Larry Eisenberg
Executive Director,
Facilities Planning and Development, Los Angeles Community College District

Larry Eisenberg is Executive Director for Facilities Planning and Development for the Los Angeles Community College District. LACCD is the largest community college district in the United States and is currently implementing a $2.2 billion construction and renovation program under Larry’s supervision.  In this capacity, Larry oversees all planning, facilities development, maintenance and real estate activities of the District. The hallmark of the LACCD program is its commitment to sustainability, making it one of the largest sustainable development programs in the world at the present time. 

Prior to his appointment as Executive Director, Larry held the position of Facilities Manager in the Washington County, Oregon Department of Support Services for nearly ten years. Prior to his work at Washington County, Larry held the position of Associate Vice President for Physical Planning and Development for the University of Wisconsin System for five years. Larry has also held several senior management positions in Wisconsin state government.

Larry currently serves on the sustainability advisory committees of several national organizations including the American College and University Presidents Climate Commitment, the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education, and The National Association of College and University Budget Officeers.

Larry received a Bachelor of Science in Urban Studies from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and a Master of Public Affairs from the LBJ School of Public Affairs, part of the University of Texas at Austin. Larry was born and raised in the San Fernando Valley. He attended North Hollywood High School. Larry is married and has a 29-year-old son, who presently lives in the Seattle area.

Robert J. Hartung

Robert J. HartungBob Hartung is founder and President of Alternative Delivery Solutions LLC (ADS), a firm whose primary purpose since 2004 is assisting public and private owners with their implementation of integrated project delivery models such as design-build.  He has more than 35 years’ construction management experience in the public and private sectors.  Bob is well versed from the perspective of the designer, owner and contractor, including more than 15 years’ design-build experience as a design-build contractor practitioner.  ADS’ clients include local government, education, special districts/agencies, federal government, and other public and private owners.  His specialty is helping public owners jump-start their design-build programs.

Bob is a recognized design-build professional by the Design-Build Institute of America (DBIA) and known as an expert and leader in design-build and other alternative project delivery methods.  He is a senior instructor for the DBIA’s professional designation and owner’s series courses.

Mr. Hartung is also an industry representative to the AIA’s ongoing work regarding Integrated Project Delivery (IPD) and was a contributing author to its IPD publications.  He is a frequent speaker at conferences, workshops and university classrooms and has authored several articles on the subject of design-build and IPD.   Bob also serves on the board of directors of the DBIA, Western Pacific Region, where he chairs the Legislative Committee.  Mr. Hartung is considered a knowledgeable design-build expert by the California State Legislature and has been called upon for advice and counsel concerning design-build legislation.

Stephen Jones
Senior Director,
Business Development, McGraw Hill Construction

Stephen JonesLeading McGraw-Hill Construction’s initiatives in Building Information Modeling, Interoperability, and Integrated Project Delivery is a high priority for Stephen A. Jones. As MHC’s senior director of business development, Steve also creates alliance relationships in technology and content with major corporations. Steve speaks widely on the implications of these new technologies and processes and in 2007 co-authored
MHC’s SmartMarket Report on Interoperability, which has been distributed to over 200,000 industry professionals. He also co-authored the SmartMarket Report on BIM, titled Transforming Design and Construction to Achieve Greater Industry Productivity, which was released in December 2008.

Before joining McGraw-Hill, Steve was a vice president with Primavera Systems, a leading project management software provider to the construction industry. Earlier in his career, Steve spent 19 years in a variety of design and management roles with architecture firms. Most recently he was a principal and board of directors member with Burt Hill, one of the largest architectural/engineering firms in the U.S.

Steve is on the Board of Direction of the buildingSMART Alliance, represents MHC on the Process Transformation Committee of CURT (Construction Users Roundtable), and represents MHC on the AGC (Associated General Contractors) BIM Forum.

Edward D. McCrary, FAIA

Edward D. McCraryAs Managing Principal of HOK/San Francisco since 1996, Ed has lead the office to an era of unprecedented productivity and design excellence. The office has tripled in size while winning numerous awards for its designs. As leader of HOK’s Integrated Project Delivery initiative, Ed is working with builders and clients to the develop IPD model. Prior to joining HOK, Ed spend 35 years with SOM. In 1994, he was the recipient of the Building Industry Conference Board (BICB) Lifetime Achievement Award.

Over the past 48 years, Ed has served as project principal or project manager for numerous large-scale, complex assignments across the nation. He is adept at interfacing large project teams with clients represented by multiple agencies and at delivering projects on-time and on-budget.

Zigmund Rubel

Mr. Rubel is a Principal at Anshen + Allen Architects and has over 18 years of experience on large and small scale healthcare projects. He was the 2007 President of the AIA San Francisco Chapter and is a Board member of the AIA California Council. Mr. Rubel has spoken throughout California and nationally on IPD, Building Information Modeling implementation, sustainability for healthcare and Operating Room Design and Construction. He is one of the authors of the AIA IPD Guide.

Barbara Wagner

Barbara Wagner is a Senior Vice President for Clark Construction¹s Western Region. Clark Construction is one of the largest general contractors in the country with over 3.5 billion dollars of annual revenue. Ms. Wagner has over

25 years of experience in the construction industry. She has extensive experience in both the design/build, healthcare and sustainable markets. In addition to heading Business Development for Clark in the Western Region, she is Officer-in-Charge for projects at Pasadena Convention Center, Dominican Hospital, and Northridge Hospital. Ms. Wagner serves on the board and as current President of DBIA¹s (Design Build Institute of America) Western Pacific Region. Ms. Wagner also sits on the Board for the California Center for Construction Education, the Executive Board for the School of Engineering at Catholic University of America and as an appointed member of the Facilities Program Advisory Committee for the State of California Department of Corrections. She is an active member of the USPS¹ Industry Advisory Council, and the American Society of Healthcare Engineers. She is a graduate of Catholic University earning a BS in Architecture and holds a Masters in Civil Engineering and Construction Management from the University of Maryland. Her professional licenses and accreditations include a contractor and engineer¹s license in the state of California and LEED accreditation.
