In what Greenbuild calls a “makeover” of the traditional plenary opening and following on the heels of the exciting Sheryl Crow announcement, the USGBC has introduced Al Gore as the speaker for the Opening Keynote and Celebration.
30,000 participants are expected to attend the conference, which will be held from November 11-13 at the Phoenix Convention Center and will highlight the sustainable effort with hundreds of workshops, seminars, and exhibits. The recent announcements nicely coincide with the 2009 theme of Main Street Green: Connect to the Conversation.
Former Vice President Al Gore will continue in his fight for carbon reduction by addressing members of the building community after an opening address by USGBC President, CEO and Founding Chair Rick Fedrizzi at Chase Field. Gore is the author of two best-sellers, one of which went on to become the Oscar-winning documentary An Inconvenient Truth, and has recently released a third book, Our Choice.
Afterwards, Sheryl Crow will perform the closing concert; she is known for her strong eco-conscious choices and is one celebrity of the “going green” brigade who is more than just a talker. From participating in a “Stop Global Warming” college tour (which showcased portions of An Inconvenient Truth as part of the presentation) to making her home energy efficient and driving a hybrid car to touring the United States in a bio-fuel bus, Sheryl Crow has used her celebrity to spread the sustainable message.
