ENR Active Markets Tour -- Kansas City
New York, NY – July 20, 2011

ENR kicked off a brand new program to engage customers and prospects from around the country with a three-day ENR Active Markets Tour of Kansas City, June 28-30, where many leading AEC firms are based.  The area is also home to several significant construction projects that have just been completed, are near completion, or are breaking ground.

The successful tour was composed of pre-scheduled, private, editorial and business meetings with VIP executives from nine major AEC firms.  It included five project or company site tours, and was punctuated by an ENR/MHC cocktail reception at the Intercontinental Hotel.  An impressive group of more than 60 Kansas CITY-area AEC executives turned out for the reception to network and meet the ENR/MHC staff.  ENR Media, C&S, and BPM groups all participated in inviting and hosting customers for the three days of activities.

The tour was led by ENR editor-in-chief Jan Tuchman together with Paul Bonington, publisher; Bob Stuono, svp sales; and Rusty Sherwood, vp strategic sales. ENR editors Tudor Van Hampton, Aileen Cho and Debra Rubin rounded out the editorial team.  Also attending were Bill Mitchell (BPM sales), Steve Werschulz (ENR media sales), Shaun Burns (Strategic C&S sales), Kevin Ireland (Analytics sales), and Brian Carpenter (C&S sales) who all took advantage of the special opportunity to meet and engage local customers.

Senior executives from Burns & MacDonnell, Black & Veatch, Transystems, JE Dunn, HNTB, PSI, Turner Construction, WireCo, Inc., and Sporting KC all turned out for meetings with their subject matter experts, or conducted the various site tours.

The ENR/MHC group visited the Legends development area, site of the state-of-the-art 19,000 seat Sporting KC Soccer stadium, designed by Populous and built by Turner Construction, as well as the soon-to-be completed 250,000 SF Hollywood Casino, also built by Turner.  These Legends projects, including the Kansas NASCAR Motor Speedway that started it all, were the inspiration of the unified government of Wyandotte County and Kansas City, Kansas, which combined have demonstrated that political will and perseverance can drive meaningful economic development and construction, even in difficult economic times.

The tour also stopped at the Kaufman Center for the Performing Arts, an impressive facility being constructed by JE Dunn and suggestive in scale and design to the iconic Sydney Opera House in Australia.  The trip included a tour of the WireCo plant where bridge cable-stays are manufactured, and the JE Dunn Equipment Yard, housing one of the country’s largest fleets of tower cranes.

The inspiration for choosing Kansas City for the first ENR Active Markets Tour came from Tom Bougher, evp sales & marketing of PSI, Inc. a geotechnical engineering firm and MHC customer.  The tour yielded numerous new story ideas, sources and contacts for the editors, and deeper business relationships for sales.

Everyone involved worked hard to ensure the tour’s success and came away with a renewed appreciation for our customers in the Kansas City area.  From the feedback we are getting, our customers appreciated our commitment to them, the local market attention, and the opportunity to meet the team face-to-face in their proud city.

Based on the excitement of this initial tour, the ENR Active Markets program is already considering its next destination city, with Denver, CO and Houston, TX leading the list.  We welcome other recommendations for Active Market Tours where we can connect with key local leaders and projects.
