The 79th Annual Dodge Construction Outlook Executive Conference was held November 1st-2nd at the Swissôtel Chicago, marking the first time in its history that the conference was hosted in the Windy City.
The much-anticipated Outlook Conference brings together forward-thinking construction professionals from across the industry to hear from a distinguished roster of speakers and panelists and to gain valuable insights to guide their business.
The focus of this year’s Outlook was Connectivity, Collaboration, and Integration, a theme that Dodge believes will be a critical driver of the construction industry going forward. In his opening remarks, Mike Petrullo offered his perspective on the state of the industry, the need for technology-enabled tools and analytics to promote efficiency and productivity, and the critical impact of Connectivity, Collaboration, and Integration on the bottom line.
A highlight of the event was the luncheon keynote delivered by Billy Beane, Executive Vice President of Baseball Operations for the Oakland Athletics, whose statistical methodology has helped revolutionize major league baseball and inspired the best-selling book and Oscar-nominated film, Moneyball. In his keynote, he shared his innovative philosophy of utilizing analytics to identify undervalued assets to create and sustain a competitive advantage.
Other featured speakers at Outlook included Dodge Senior Economist Richard Branch; Dodge Senior Director of Industry Insights Research Steve Jones; Cristian deRitis, Senior Director at Moody’s Analytics; and a panel featuring industry players representing all stages of the AEC supply chain: Danielle Dy Buncio, President, VIATechnik LLC; Hilda Espinal, Senior Vice President, Chief Technology Officer, CannonDesign; David Pikey, Vice President, Corporate Technology, The Hill Group; Mike Prefling, Director of Virtual Construction, Ryan Companies; Nick Scheib, Marketing Director, Dow Building Solutions; and Gene Toombs IV, Group President, MiTek Industries, Inc.
The centerpiece of the conference was Dodge Chief Economist Robert Murray’s Dodge Construction Outlook presentation—his 26th consecutive Outlook!—which assessed the prospects for the construction industry in 2018 as reflected in the construction start statistics for major sectors. Bob predicted that total U.S. construction starts for 2018 will climb 3% to $765 billion, following gains of 5% in 2016 and an estimated 4% in 2017.
