This issue highlights the new USCC+USG Commercial Construction Index (CCI). Dodge began working with The US Chamber of Commerce and USG over a year ago to develop an index and accompanying report that would gauge the overall confidence and general health of the commercial construction market from the perspective of US contractors.
Over that year the team worked on developing an in-depth survey investigating key topics in the industry such as labor supply and skill issues, project backlogs, financing, costs, materials availability, and other recurring themes. We also determine a topic for the “question of the quarter” that provides insight into trends that influence their business, such as sustainable construction practices, worker training practices, and use of prefabricated building components. The survey is administered each quarter to the members of the Dodge Contractor Panel, a proprietary group of general contractors and trade subcontractors that allows Dodge to conduct research directed toward with these crucial market participants.
A key component of the research is the Index itself, which is calculated each quarter based on specific contractor responses to questions about their current backlog, their revenue outlook and their gauge of new business opportunities. These combine to create the CCI, which currently is registering a healthy market for the contractor segment.
