I spend my day ensuring that the Engineering teams are aligned to deliver product enhancements, updates and new innovative features to our customers. Our Engineering teams are comprised of approximately 20 on-shore and 50 off-shore members who span many disciplines: Business/Data Analysts, Software Engineers, Database Administrators, Quality Engineers, DevOps Engineers, and Data Engineers. Aside from new development, the teams also engage in research and development to stay ahead of the technology curve and introduce new insightful ways to make use of our data for our customers.
It’s hard to pick just one aspect of my job that I like most because there are many. My team is absolutely awesome. We work well together, have a common focus, and all understand what it takes to deliver quality software. Another aspect that I really like is the constant challenge of providing top-class software to our customers. Building new features on top of a very complicated system requires a lot of thought, consideration, and know-how. This challenge drives me to think of multiple ways to achieve a goal, balance the tradeoffs and then make a decision. Who could ask for more than that!
Building cohesive, high functioning engineering teams. Building teams is a difficult proposition. Finding the right mix of talent, personalities, and motivation is extremely important in creating an effective team. Throw in the additional difficulty of distance and time and the challenge magnifies. Our Engineering teams have done a fabulous job of working together as teams despite these challenges and I strive to guide them and give them the tools they need to be effective. In the upcoming year, we are looking into even better ways to facilitate collaboration among the teams over video and through shared digital whiteboards. Stay tuned for how we fare.
Priorities for the next 12 months involve a lot of behind-the-scenes cleanup to make our processes and processing pipelines more efficient. We will also be looking at some new tools that will allow us to do more with our data which will translate into some very interesting insights for our customers.
Personally, being a tech guy through and through, I see that direct data integrations to our partners, vendors and customers will be one of the most attractive opportunities for Dodge. This would allow us to perform integrations securely and easily. It allows our customers to get the data they see in our applications into their own systems so that they can manipulate it in the way they wish. Our direct integrations will allow for timely retrieval of data, not just daily, weekly or monthly feeds. This type of customized data integration is something everybody expects from a digital data provider like Dodge.
Construction industry professionals and companies have typically lagged in technology adoption. This is changing rapidly as the workforce as a whole is becoming much more tech savvy and demanding that the tools they use take advantage of the latest technologies such as mobile devices, direct integrations and reactive web sites. This is good for Dodge as we are a technology driven company that continues to evolve digital solutions for our customers. We already provide a mobile application for finding projects and companies, we have multiple methods for directly consuming our data, and our web-based applications continue to push new content, features, and user interface elements.
I love spending time with my wife, Maria, and my two daughters, Catherine (18) and Corinne (16). I’m also a sports junkie. My favorite sport is soccer, by far. I love playing it, watching it, and was at my happiest when coaching my two girls. I’m also a big NFL fan and I really like playing fantasy football with colleagues and friends.
