Developer Bruce Ratner officially announced his development team’s purchase of the New Jersey Nets today, prompting the franchise’s move to Brooklyn, NY. The move precipitates the Atlantic Yards project in Downtown Brooklyn, a $2.5 billion, 7 million-plus square foot megaproject that will forever alter the borough.

Frank Gehry, FAIA, will play a major role in the project, designing the Nets’ titanium-clad 800,000 square foot, 20,000 seat arena and a 44-story office tower. The arena, still in early planning stages, will likely have two glass facades and a roof garden/ rooftop skating rink.

The project will also include 2.1 million square feet of commercial office space, 4.4 million square feet of housing, and 300,000 square feet of retail. Six acres of landscaped green space will be designed by Olin Partnership, well known for its landscape work in Battery Park City and Bryant Park in Manhattan.

The plan has been loudly criticized by some local residents with a number of complaints ranging from the projects’ huge scale to the displacement of a block of residents.
