Bechtel Group Inc. is in negotiations with the city of New York to take over the role of program manager, currently being filled by the city's Dept. of Design & Construction. The official word is expected to come early next week, according to sources close to the negotiations.

Bovis Lend Lease also submitted a proposal at the city's invitation.

Bechtel would organize and manage the cleanup of the site, currently being handled in four zones by Bovis Lend Lease, Turner Construction/Plaza Construction, Amec and Tully Construction. Bechtel has been helping the city at Ground Zero since the day of the attacks on Sept. 11.
